Car Accident Kills 2 Elderly People in Ormond Beach

November 16, 2010 - Ormond Beach, FL - A strange car accident has resulted in the deaths of 2 people in a small Aberdeen subdivision in Ormond Beach.  

Ann Owen, 71, and Timothy Postlethwait, 70, lost their lives when her car swayed out of control in a bizarre accident right after leaving the home that he and his wife, Vincenza Postlethwait, shared.

The Daytona Beach News Journal reported that the fatal car accident that killed Owen and Postlethwait happened on the afternoon of Saturday, November 13 just before 4:30 p.m. in a gated housing subdivision for people ages 55 and older.

Owen had lost her husband several years ago and also suffered from Lupus. Vincenza had helped her often and Timothy would drive Owen's car to help her run errands, as she didn't like to drive, according to friends.

Friends speculate that the pair had returned from a shopping trip and Owen had gotten into the driver's seat to drive the short distance from the Postlethwaits' home to her own, also located on Bluewater Lake Circle.

A police report stated that Owen's 1998 Plymouth sedan started moving backward without warning, while the driver's-side door was open, hitting both of the Postlethwaits. As a result, Timothy Postlethwait was dragged onto the roadway, where he was run over. Owen was ejected and also run over as the car continued in reverse down the road.

Ormond Beach Police Sgt. Kenny Hayes said he wasn't sure whether the car had been geared in park or reverse, but the end result was the same by the time the sedan came to a complete stop after hitting a tree.

Although Vincenza was knocked over, she was able to get up and go to her husband. Both Timothy and Owen died from their injuries the next day.
