Several states have already passed laws that make it a crime to send or read text messages while driving. The Florida legislature has considered such a law, but nothing has been passed as of yet. Governor Crist supports a ban on texting while driving in Florida, and there are currently several proposed bills for the upcoming legislative session.
There have been several studies that prove driving while texting is actually more dangerous than driving drunk. One study found that when a person is driving and texting at the same time, they are over 20 times more likely to be involved in a serious traffic accident.
When a person is injured or killed in a traffic crash, a good Florida Auto Accident Attorney will always investigate whether the at-fault driver was using their cell phone. This includes sending or receiving a text message, talking on the cell phone or using any of the other applications available these days. I see this occur more and more often these days in St Petersburg car accident cases and it is strong evidence of negligent driving that can help prove liability in your case if you are injured. It can also be used against you if you are using your cell phone.
So in addition to the obvious, “Don’t Drink and Drive”, you can add “Don’t Text and Drive” too.
