The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has released new information regarding research they have been conducting on the effects of aging on driving ability. Elderly drivers are more likely to cause a serious car accident because of the diminished physical and mental capabilities that accompany aging.
Between 2002 and 2003 there were almost 15 million Florida drivers, including more than 2.2 million drivers between the ages of 65 and 74, and almost 250,000 over the age of 85. At least 20% of the drivers aged 85 and older were classified as dementia drivers with a mild to moderate condition. Dementia is a mental health disorder that often causes confusion and disorientation, dangerous conditions when behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Research from the U.S. Department of Transportation shows that injury-related deaths among the elderly aged 65-74 are most commonly caused by motor vehicles. This is the second leading cause of death in this age group as well. The 2009 Florida Traffic Crash Statistics Report shows that drivers aged 70 and older have the highest rate of crash involvement in all crashes and drivers over 87 have the highest rate of fatal crashes. The total number of fatalities of drivers aged 70 and older in the state of Florida for 2009 was nearly 300.
Elderly drivers generally suffer from more physical and mental impairments than a comparatively younger driver simply because of the effects of aging on the body. Diminished vision, slowed mental reaction time, and impaired physical reactions are all effects of aging that can increase the risk of car accidents.
