Slip and Fall Accidents as a Result of Neglected Property

While many Florida slip and fall accidents are routinely caused by hazards or obstacles on walkways, many preventable slip and fall accidents are a result of the property owner's ignorance or failure to fix dangerous conditions that lead to these accidents.

Here are a few examples of situations where a property owner's negligence in safely maintaining their property could lead to serious slip and fall injuries.

  • 1.  A woman is walking down a staircase and is using the handrail to help keep her balance. The handrail is old and unstable and actually comes loose from the wall, causing the woman to lose her balance and fall down the stairs. The owner had a duty to ensure that the handrail was secure and safe for use. The failure to properly maintain that handrail is a form of negligence.
  • 2.   A man is walking through a grocery store where a section of the floor was just cleaned, but no warnings were put up to let him know the floor was wet. As a result, he slipped, causing a serious back injury. The lack of a warning in this case constitutes neglect.
  • 3.   A neighbor invites another neighbor over to their home for a dinner party.  The homeowner neglects to tell their guest about some loose floorboards on the deck. The neighbor then trips and breaks their arm. Since the homeowner was aware of the loose floorboards but failed to let their guest know about the danger, they may be held liable for the injuries incurred.
