Believe it or not, many Americans are still sustaining injuries because they are not wearing seatbelts. However, there is good news. The NHTSA has released figures showing that seatbelt usage is up from 83 percent in 2008 to 84 percent in 2009.
Another piece of good news is that the use of seatbelts by Americans has been consistently increasing since 1994. Research has shown that the number of fatalities due to drivers and passengers not buckled up when traveling in a vehicle has been at a steady decline.
The NHTSA has also reported that research shows that seatbelt usage is higher in states that allow the police to pull over vehicles when it is apparent that seatbelts are not being used. States that have weaker seatbelt laws show lower seatbelt usage.
We all know that it only takes a few seconds to buckle up. Drivers should not only make sure they are buckled up before operating a vehicle, but should also make sure everyone in their vehicle does the same. It sounds trite, but it could mean the difference between life and death.
