There is much debate when it comes to the issue of “dangerous dogs” and their tendency to bite or attack a helpless victim. Every year, millions of people are bitten by dogs and often these dog attacks lead to serious injuries. In 2008, 23 people were killed in dog attacks in the United States. Pit bull type dogs were responsible for 65 percent of these fatal dog attacks. The majority of dog attack victims were children in 2008. These frightening statistics have only fueled the debate regarding dangerous dog breeds.
Many insurance companies have excluded certain dog breeds from being covered under the owner’s policy, because of the history and track record of that type of dog attacking and injuring a human being. Courts have even confirmed that certain dog breeds are inherently dangerous. However, some people argue that a dog is not necessarily dangerous, but the danger lies with the owner. Other people believe that a dog is only dangerous if it has acted in an aggressive or unsafe manner.
Despite your stance on whether a dog or the owner is dangerous, there are dog breeds that are considered to be more prone to attack. The top ten most dangerous dog breeds are listed below:
• Pit bulls – When a pit bull attacks, sometimes the victim has little or no opportunity to read the warning signals. Unlike other breeds, a pit pull is almost as likely to attack an adult as it is a child. Pit bulls lock their jaw on their victims and are known for mauling people to death.
• Rottweilers – These types of dogs have a reputation of being aggressive because of their territorial instincts. Rottweilers are often used as guard dogs.
• German Shepherds – This dog breed is intelligent and alert. These dogs are known to be fearless and are used as police dogs.
• Huskies – Even though these dogs are believed to have a gentle temperament, they account for many of the fatal dog bites each year.
• Alaskan Malamutes – These dogs become destructive when they are bored.
• Doberman Pinschers – This dog breed is frequently used for guard dogs and can become very aggressive if provoked. Usually Dobermans only attack if they believe their property or family is in danger.
• Chow Chows – These dogs can be aggressive if they are poorly bred.
• Presa Canarios – Presa Canarios were originally bred to guard and fight with cattle. An attack by a Presa Canario can result in serious injuries, as these dogs have incredible power.
• Boxers – This dog breed is usually not aggressive, but is difficult to train.
• Dalmatians – Dalmatians are extremely protective dogs and have been known to be aggressive towards humans.
If you have been attacked by a dog or if your child has been the victim of a dog attack, the owner of the canine can be held responsible. Contact the Law Offices of William K. Saron at (866) 836-4947 or (727) 345-4566 to speak with an experienced dog bite attorney.
