Broken Collar Bone from a Florida Accident

A slip and fall accident, car crash, bicycle accident or other catastrophic event can lead to a fractured collar bone, also known as a broken clavicle. Even though this bone fracture is one of the most common breaks, the recovery can be both long and painful. If you believe you may have a broken collar bone, you need to be aware of the symptoms, treatment and compensation available.

The collar bone runs from the front of your shoulder to the sternum, also known as the breast bone. The risk of fracture increases when you fall onto an outstretched arm or the outside of your shoulder. In a Florida slip and fall accident, your collar bone can break from the impact of the fall. A broken collar bone can also occur in a car accident or bicycle accident, when the bone comes into direct impact with an object either in the vehicle or on the bicycle. These types of fractures can be very painful and may cause you to take time away from work and the activities that you enjoy.

Some of the symptoms of a fractured collar bone include the following:

• Pain directly on the clavicle
• Swelling or bruising
• Limited mobility in the shoulder area
• A bony deformity that can be seen or felt
• Bump in the fractured area
• Arm numbness or tingling
• Cracking noise when you move your shoulder
• Difficulty moving your arm

Usually a physician will treat a broken collar bone by recommending a sling be worn to help keep the shoulders back. You may also be prescribed pain medication and the physician may suggest that you rest. If the collar bone fracture is severely displaced or shortened, you may need to have surgery. The doctor may even recommend physical therapy, depending on the severity of your injury.
