Car Accidents Leading Cause of Children’s Deaths

Every year, approximately 9 million children are the victims of unintentional injuries in the United States. That means that 20 children die each day from a preventable injury, which is more than all of the diseases combined. Falls and car accidents are the leading cause of those injuries.

A government report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that from 2001 to 2006, approximately 55 million children and teens were treated for unintentional injuries at U.S. emergency room departments. Researchers found that the majority of children’s deaths were related to transportation. It has been estimated that 8,000 deaths each year involve a car accident, pedestrian accident or bicycle accident. The majority of deaths among children ages 5 to 19 were caused by car accidents.

Some of the other alarming statistics reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention include the following:

• Approximately 12,175 children aged 0 to 19 died each year in the United States as the result of an unintentional injury.

• Males were almost twice as likely as females to die from unintentional injuries.

• Injury death rates varied by state, based on the cause of death. The death rates from transportation-related accidents were highest in some southern states and those in the upper plains. The northeast region had the lowest rate of transportation-related death rates.

• Some of the causes of nonfatal injuries among children included falls, being struck by an object, animal bites, insect stings, overexertion and car crashes.

A car accident can lead to serious injuries among children, including traumatic brain injury, head trauma, spinal cord injury, paralysis and other permanent conditions. These types of injuries can lead to lifelong disabilities and the need for continuous medical care and treatment. If you or your child has been injured in a car accident that you believe was caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. A successful Florida car accident case can result in compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages and other costs associated with the injury.
