Researchers discovered that one in 10 binge drinkers drove their vehicles the last time they drank excessively. That means that there are drivers on the roads and highways in Florida who have blood alcohol levels well above the legal limit. These drunk drivers put the people in our state at risk of a serious car accident.
According to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of binge drinkers left the bar, restaurant or night club after consuming at least five alcoholic beverages. Approximately 12 percent of those studied admitted to driving within two hours of their last round of heavy drinking.
The study included 14,000 binge drinkers, who were people that said that they had five or more drinks in one setting at least once a month. The study was conducted via a telephone survey from 2003 to 2004. Researchers were trying to uncover how likely someone is to drive after binge drinking. The authors of the study said that what they discovered about binge drinkers shows the need for bars and restaurants to stop serving customers alcohol after they are intoxicated.
Regarding drivers who said that they got behind the wheel after drinking excessively, about half had consumed seven or more drinks. Approximately 25 percent said that they had at least 10 drinks. Even though drinking over a long period of time and eating food can help slow the effect of alcohol, 10 drinks is a lot no matter how much someone has eaten or how long it took them to drink the beverages.
Every year, more than 11,000 people are killed in drunk driving accidents across the nation. If you or a family member has been seriously injured in a Florida car accident caused by an intoxicated driver, you have rights and should pursue financial compensation.
