Coping with Traumatic Amputation

Serious accidents can lead to all sorts of injuries, including traumatic amputation. This type of injury is defined as a loss of a body part, typically a finger, toe, arm or leg and is usually caused by an accident or other catastrophic event. Sometimes a limb has to be removed in a rescue situation. For example, if an accident victim’s leg is caught underneath a vehicle and the only way to save their life is to remove the limb, the rescue team may employ this option.

The severed body part can often be reattached following a car accident or other significant event, especially if proper care is taken. However, a car accident may destroy blood vessels and result in tissue death, making reattachment difficult, if not impossible. Serious accidents are the leading cause of for amputations in people under the age of 50.

Traumatic amputation is linked with numerous complications, such as infection, bleeding and shock. As it can be assumed, it is crucial that medical attention be given immediately following a traumatic amputation.

Life After Amputation
Life after a traumatic amputation is not the same for the accident victim, although the long-term outcome has improved over time. Rehabilitation and new prosthetic designs have allowed many victims to return to as normal as a life as possible. Many patients now have the option of a functional prosthesis in lieu of a nonfunctional replanted limb. Physical therapy and regular exercise can help injured victims recover from amputation.

If your injury was the result of someone else’s negligence, such as in a car accident, truck accident or other catastrophic event, you may be able to obtain financial compensation. Compensation could include medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering and other costs associated with your injuries.
