Aggressive Drivers Believed To Be As Dangerous As Drunk Drivers
When it comes to the top traffic safety issues, aggressive driving ranks high as a major concern of the American public.
ABC News and The Washington Post conducted a survey a few years ago that asked people which of several threats “most endangers your own safety on the road.” Among those surveyed, 32 percent identified aggressive drivers as the biggest threat, which had as many responses as drunk drivers. Aggressive driving had nearly three times as many responses as any other item that was asked.
Another survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration discovered that the majority of respondents felt threatened by the behavior of other drivers at least once in the past year and as many as one in seven reported feeling threatened by other drivers every week or more.
So what is considered aggressive driving? There are many definitions. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, aggressive driving is “any unsafe driving behavior, performed deliberately and with ill intention or disregard for safety.” Some of the examples of aggressive driving behavior include:
Tailgating
Weaving in and out of traffic
Failure to yield the right of way
Preventing cars from passing
Excessive speeding
Running stop signs or red lights
Aggressive driving is a major problem and is a factor in many fatal car accidents. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 56 percent of fatal crashes are linked to some type of aggressive driving behavior.
