  • Hit-and-Run Suspect Shot, Apprehended by Sarasota Police
    Aug 27, 2010

August 27, 2010 - Sarasota, FL - Harry Bell, 30, may be facing hit-and-run charges, as well as brandishing a weapon against officers after an Aug. 19 chase led to police shooting and arresting him.

    WTSP.com
reports that Bell was the suspect driver who caused a hit-and-run accident in Osprey about 5 miles from where he was finally apprehended. Police began following the dark-green pickup, which had sustained noticeable damage from the accident, from the intersection of Beneva and Clark Roads.

After attempting to pull over Bell's truck, officers say he came to a stop at the intersection and pulled out a gun. Unaware if the gun was loaded or not, officers opened fire, striking Bell but not causing any fatal injury. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

On top of hit-and-run charges, Bell is a suspect in several armed robberies recently reported in the Sarasota area. Evidence obtained from inside his truck-including a mask-and the description of the truck itself may link him to the other crimes.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' 2009 Traffic Crash Statistics Report, there were 197,214 traffic crashes resulting in injury and 2,563 fatalities as a result of vehicle accidents in Florida.

  • New Port Richey Teen Dies After Street Racing Near Rowan Road
    Aug 20, 2010

August 14, 2010 - New Port Richey, FL - A New Port Richey teen is dead following a fatal car accident on August 13th that may have been caused by street racing.

Reports from WTSP10 News say that 19-year-old Alexander Vachon was driving his black sedan and racing a silver Infinity when he lost control while going nearly 100MPH according to witness Dustin Roberts. Vachon's car came around a curve at the intersection of Rowan Road and Broadmoore Drive when he went off the road, through a guard rail, and flew about 30 feet into the air, flipping several times.

Vachon was killed in the car accident while his passenger, 18-year-old Austin Skumautz, was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in critical condition. Roberts, who was driving behind the 2 racing vehicles at the time of the crash, stopped to render aid while the Infinity drove off. He found Skumautz ejected from the vehicle, face down in a fetal position in a nearby pond. He was unconscious but still breathing.

This fatal car accident occurred in a popular area for street racing among teens, which is causing police to step up action against the popular illegal activity. In areas like Rowan Road, where the speed limit is 45MPH, there are many residential areas nearby which makes street racing dangerous for both the drivers and nearby residents. One such area is Cypress Trail Apartments, where the flipped vehicle ended up landing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,978 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
