December 27, 2010 - Port Richey, FL - The most recent in a string of fatal bicycle accidents in the Tampa Bay area occurred on December 19 when Michael Dwayne Kellogg, 46, was struck at a crosswalk.
WTSP.com reports that Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene where Kellogg was struck at a marked crosswalk, throwing him from his bicycle. Officers said that although the crosswalk was marked, Kellogg did not have a crossing signal when he was hit by a 1988 Honda Civic driven by Nicole Elizabeth Dobbs.
State troopers say Dobbs attempted to brake but was unable to do so in time, striking the bicycle with the left front of her vehicle. The accident is the 10th such fatality involving bicyclists in the Tampa Bay area since late July.
Pedestrian and bicycle accidents often lead to fatal injuries because of the lack of protection around the victim. Even with proper safety gear, being thrown from a bicycle or getting hit by a car can result in severe head trauma and spinal cord injury. These types of injuries are often permanently disabling, if not fatal, and can lead to months in the hospital, expensive recovery methods and years of therapy.
