

May 26, 2011 - Tampa, Fla. - According to ABC Action News, a 3 car crash closed down northbound lanes of I-275 and left 12 injured in the late evening of May 8, 2011. Three of the passengers were in serious condition after the Tampa accident.
The crash occurred at about 9 p.m. south of Fowler Avenue on I-275 and more than 30 emergency responders worked the scene until the Interstate reopened approximately 2 1/2 hours later.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene to discover a white Pontiac Sunfire in the middle of the highway with 3 people inside, a black Lexus IS 300 with one passenger that had slammed into a sign support post on the driver's side, and a maroon GMC Envoy SUV with 9 people inside that had rolled down the embankment lining I-275 after being forced over the guardrail.
According to police reports, at least 2 passengers were ejected during the SUV rollover.
Of the 12 injured, 1 was taken to Tampa General Hospital, 5 to St. Joseph's Hospital, and 6 to University Community Hospital.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,978 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
