January 25, 2011 - North Port, FL - Two families are mourning the death of one boy and the injury of another after a fatal ATV accident on January 15th.
ABC Action News Tampa reports the fatal ATV crash happened around 5 p.m. in a wooded area near Joewood Circle. James Wyatt Grimes, 12, was driving an ATV with his friend, Daniel Weis, 11, as a passenger. Both boys were wearing helmets and goggles when the ATV struck a tree head on.
Grimes was killed in the ATV accident while Weis was taken to Sarasota Memorial North Port Emergency Room for treatment. The boys were on a camping trip with family when the ATV accident occurred.
ATVs can be dangerous when inexperienced riders take the controls and should always be used with proper adult supervision when drivers are underage. Even in capable hands, many ATVs can be unstable and serious injuries could result if the ATV crashes or flips. If your child is injured while riding an ATV because of another's negligence, you may need to file a Florida personal injury claim.
A St. Petersburg accident lawyer can assist you in determining the factors that led to the ATV accident and whether another party is at fault for the damage sustained from the accident.
