June 28, 2010 - Pinellas County, FL - A tragic 8-vehicle accident on June 19 has claimed the lives of 2 people and injured 17 others. The multi-vehicle accident took place on U.S. 19 near Nursery Road at about 6 p.m.
According to reports in The Ledger, the driver of the car who initiated the pileup, Daniel Barga, was listed in critical condition but has since been released from the hospital. Barga originally told police he was a passenger in the vehicle and that the driver had left the scene of the accident on foot.
At least 17 people were injured in the 8-car pileup, with several victims being transported to local hospitals. Unfortunately, not everyone involved in the crash survived. Both Richard Kelly and Jancarlos Alberto Schaffer, who were riding in the same vehicle, were killed in the accident. Both were passengers in the vehicle. The condition of that vehicle's driver is currently unknown.
Of the injuries reported, only Barga is considered to have sustained life-threatening injuries. Barga has been charged with driving without a valid driver's license, causing death and serious bodily harm, and possession of Roxicodone. Other charges against Barga are pending.
