Exactly one year ago, on January 26, 2008, five men were killed in a car accident at Greystone Airport in Anthony.
Joshua Ammirato, 18, Devon Hime, 19, Jacob James Casey, 19, Dustin “Smiley” Dawe, 19 and Isaac Ammirato, 20, were all in a BMW M5 sedan at Greystone Airport where they had attended a party at the private aviation community. Joshua Ammirato was driving the BMW when it left the end of the 1 ½ mile long runway at an estimate 120 miles per hour.
The BMW flew 200 feet over an embankment and hit two trees, which shredded the car so severely that the first people to arrive at the crash scene didn’t recognize it as an automobile and thought it was an airplane that had crashed.
Devon Hime’s father, James Hime received the call at work regarding his son’s tragic car crash. His fellow employees drove him home to Clermont after he received the news of his son’s death. Hime then headed to Greystone Airport off Northeast 95th Street, to the crash site.
“I guess I wanted to see where my son took his last breath and that it really did happen,” said Hime.
Hime spent a year in grief counseling, trying to find ways to cope with his tragic loss. During the times that the pain became too much to handle, Hime would call his seven brothers and sisters at all hours of the day and night and cry.
Devon’s mother, Sharon Lindsey, also received the awful telephone call regarding the accident. Lindsey and her husband, Gary, drove to the crash site to find out if their son was involved in the crash.
Lindsey has also sought professional help and still sees a psychologist and psychiatrist and takes heavy doses of anti-depressants to make it through the day.
Sharon and Gary Lindsey plan to release five, white doves at the crash site today in memory of their son and his four friends who were killed.
