Bicyclist Killed After Being Struck By Car

In St. Petersburg, a 58-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a car.  Franklin D. Cameron was riding his bicycle on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S when he lost control of his bicycle and fell in front of an oncoming vehicle.  Cameron was dragged underneath the car in the early hours of New Year’s Day, according to St. Petersburg police.  Cameron was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to police, Cameron was attempting to exit the driveway in front of 5241 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S at approximately 12:47 AM Thursday, when the accident took place.  He lost control of his bicycle and fell onto the southbound curb of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St.  Cameron hit a southbound 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo and became lodged underneath it as the driver, Dontavous H. Thomas, 21, tried to stop his vehicle.

Thomas and his passenger were not injured.  However, Cameron was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:35 AM.

Leon Dexter, 68, was Cameron’s landlord.  Dexter, who rented an apartment to Cameron called his tenant his friend.  “We used to drink a beer together on Sundays.  He was just such a nice guy, so honest,” said Dexter.

Dexter said that Cameron was forced to move out from the apartment temporarily after his girlfriend filed a domestic violence injunction.  The judge ordered Cameron to stay 500 feet away from his own apartment.  Online court records did show that Angela Moore had filed for an injunction against Cameron, but the judge’s order could not be confirmed as the court clerk’s office was closed at the time this article was written.

Police are still investigating the fatal accident and are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.  They will also be determining if charges need to be filed.
