Davis Islands Car Accident Injures Three UT Student

Posted on Dec 04, 2009

A Davis Islands car accident involving three University of Tampa students critically injures one student. The incident took place at approximately 3:30 AM on Tuesday morning, November 24, 2009 on Davis Islands.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the accident occurred when Michael Louis-Fernand, 20, a student at UT, was heading west on West Davis Boulevard and lost control of his car. The 2009 Volkswagen GTI struck a curb and crashed into a concrete wall in front of a home.

There were two other UT students, Michelle Sams, 20, and Jorge Jimenez, 20, in the car at the time of the accident. They were returning from a candlelight vigil for a fellow classmate who had been killed by a hit-and-run driver earlier in the month.

Rescue workers transported Sams to Tampa General Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. She was treated for a lacerated liver and loss of blood.

According to Tampa police spokesperson Andrea Davis, Louis-Fernand and Jimenez were also transported to Tampa General Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. No one was injured in the house.

The Tampa accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Investigators are in the process of trying to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor. A blood sample was taken from Louis-Fernand. However, the results are not expected for several weeks.
