Drunk Driver Hits SUV in St. Petersburg, Ejecting Young Girl

August 3, 2011, St. Petersburg, Fla - According to a report at TampaBay.com, a girl from Tampa was thrown from an SUV and landed on a pickup truck's hood, after the SUV was hit from behind by a drunk driver on Sunday, July 31.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Kedavia Jacobs, 6, was among 4 people in a 2001 Lincoln Navigator thatwas stopped at a red light on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, near 94th Avenue N, until John Robert Jakab, the driver of a 1998 Mazda pickup, rear-ended the SUV.

The child was thrown out of the back window, which police believe was down at the time, and landed on the Mazda before falling to the ground. Jacobs sustained severe facial injuries.

Police said Jakab displayed signs of impairment and had a blood alcohol level of 0.187 and 0.172. He was taken into custody and charged with probation violation, DUI resulting in injury and other charges. The SUV driver, Lorne Curry of Tampa, was cited for driving with an unrestrained juvenile passenger.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,558 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
