July 13, 2010 - St. Petersburg, FL - Clarence Rodgers, his 8 cats and bird are lucky to be alive and unharmed after the collapse of a portion of their roof at their St. Petersburg home on July 6.
Recent heavy rains caused the roof over an enclosed patio - which had been converted into the apartment Rodgers and his pets called home - to collapse. Rodgers was in his bedroom when he heard the ceiling begin to creak. Rodgers, who is 81 years old, ducked and ran for the door, his pets fleeing with him.
St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene around 8 p.m. and Captain Tim O'Donnell confirmed that the roof was unable to withstand the weight of the heavy rains that had fallen on it, causing the collapse. Power had to be disconnected to the house and The American Red Cross relocated Rodgers for the night. His pets remained with neighbors.
