Falling Television Kills Florida Toddler

Posted on Nov 25, 2008

A 16-month old boy was killed when a television and stand fell over and struck him.  Florida sheriff’s deputies are still investigating the strange incident that led to the boy’s death.

According to Collier County Deputies, a television fell on Julian Sanchez after his older sibling climbed the 4-foot tall television stand to turn off the TV.  The television and stand then fell over and the 36-inch TV hit the toddler.

Julian’s father, Reinaldo Sanchez was quoted as saying, “I was at work and I got a phone call that there was an accident and it had to do with my son.  I don’t wish this upon my worst enemy.”

The boy was taken to Physicians Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Julian’s father said that he couldn’t stop shaking after hearing the news.  He said that his family will just have to take one day at a time.  Sanchez described his son as the biggest kid he has who never cried.  He was an awesome baby.

The incident is still being investigated by deputies, but the scene appears to be consistent with an accidental death.

Julian’s death is not the first tragedy the family has been forced to face.  They also lost a child in 2006 from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS.

Several different safety devices have been created to prevent accidents, such as the one that killed Julian.  These safety devices are called “anti-tip kits” and they come in many different forms, but all of them basically secure the furniture or television to the wall.  The cost for the kits range from $8 to just under $20.
