A suspect has yet to be named in the fatal hit-and-run accident that killed Kenneth Watkinson Jr. and Craig Lewis Elford.
Police do know that a Porsche hit and killed Watkinson and Elford on a dark Fort Lauderdale beach street, but they have not been able to identify the driver of the vehicle. The car is registered to Ryan M. Levin 34, of Fort Lauderdale and police have already spoken with him. Sgt. Frank Sousa, a police spokesman, said that Levin’s whereabouts that evening were part of the investigation, but that the vehicle had not been reported stolen.
Sousa would not comment on the details of the case and said the investigation could take months.
At the time of the fatal crash, Watkinson, 48, and Craig Elford, 39, were walking south on State Road A1A just south of Las Olas Boulevard at approximately 2:30 AM Friday morning. They were hit by a Porsche that jumped the curb and hit them from behind. Both men died instantly.
Police found the Porsche that they believed hit the men, abandoned and with a smashed windshield, on the ramp from eastbound Interstate 595 to northbound I-95. It is believed that the vehicle could have been in a drag race at the time of the accident, as police received a call about two vehicles speeding down A1A just minutes before being notified of the hit-and-run accident.
Watkinson was married and the father of three. He had lived in Warwickshire, England was in town to recruit a pharmaceutical company that he shared with Elford. His body will be returned to England.
Elford has two children and the youngest is less than 3 months old. The Miami Herald attempted to reach Elford’s family in Ratley, England, but was informed that the family would rather keep it a private matter.
