September 16, 2010 - St. Petersburg, FL - A 7-car pileup resulted in one fatality and several other victims requiring hospitalization.
WTSP.com reports that the chain-reaction crash occurred September 7 on 5th Avenue and 49th Street North in west St. Petersburg. Police say that a Land Rover driven by Douglas Henriott, 25, was traveling westbound on 5th Avenue and failed to stop behind the 6 vehicles that were waiting at the 49th Street North red light.
Henriott's vehicle struck the last car in the line which set off a chain reaction of rear-end crashes. One victim, Mary Margaret Overton, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene. Henriott and 1 other driver were transported to Bayfront Medical Center while another driver was sent to Palms of Pasadena Hospital.
Police are still investigating the crash but they believe alcohol was not a contributing factor.
