Florida Car Accident on I-75 Kills Two Men

Posted on Apr 07, 2009

Two men have been identified by the Florida Highway Patrol as the crash victims from an accident that occurred on April 1, 2009.  Rodimiro Hernandez-Cruz, a 38-year-old man, and Emilio Sandoval-Delgado, a 46-year-old man from Smyrna, Georgia, were identified as the passengers killed in the crash on Interstate 75.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Rogelio Gonzalez-Avila, a 22-year-old Austell, Georgia resident, was driving the 2002 Ford Explorer at the time of the fatal crash in Florida.  He suffered only minor injuries, as did his passenger, Jose Roberto Aguilar Gonzalez, a 28-year-old Tampa resident.

Miguel Hernandez-Cerda, 26, of Huntington Beach, California, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

There is an ongoing investigation as to why the Explorer crashed and whether another vehicle was involved.   According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, a woman witnessed the accident, which occurred during rush hour and caused a traffic jam in the northbound lanes of I-75 just south of the University Parkway exit.

Four of the men were ejected from the Explorer as it spun and rolled.  The Florida Highway Patrol said that none of the men were wearing seat belts.  Following the accident, debris was scattered along the side of I-75, including hard hats, boots, electrical cords, a cooler and soda cans.
