A Florida woman was hit and killed while she was standing on a Miami street. She was struck by one of the two cars involved in an accident early morning on Friday, April 17, 2009. Three of the people involved in the accident fled the scene, but police later caught them just a few blocks away.
According to a local resident, Rudolfo Tabia, cars speed all the time in that area and he believed that the woman was killed because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
“This is the worst accident, there have been other accidents here but this is the worst I’ve seen here,” said Tabia.
The fatal accident took place shortly before 5:00 AM at the intersection of SW 3rd Avenue and NW 7th Street, where the two vehicles collided. According to traffic homicide investigators, most of the details of the crash are still being investigated, but they did confirm that the woman was an “innocent bystander” and was killed as a result of the vehicle collision.
The woman’s name has not been released, but Miami Fire Rescue spokesman LT. Ignatius Carroll did say that she was approximately 50 years old.
The Jeep Cherokee that was involved in the crash had flipped over onto its side by the impact, which trapped the driver inside. Fire rescue workers were able to get him out.
The occupants of the blue Mitsubishi fled the scene, but were caught by police.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the crash and tests have been conducted regarding speed and alcohol as possible contributing factors.
