A teenage girl was killed in a car accident last Friday when the Ford SUV she was traveling in careened off Interstate 75 near Gainesville and burst into flames. Three other teens were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident and sustained injuries.
17-year-old Allyson Marie Faulk was driving to Florida State University with three other Plant High School students to attend the university’s homecoming game. However, their weekend trip came to an unfortunate end when they were passing Micanopy at approximately 6:20 PM.
Lizzy Mischo, 18, was one of the passengers and said that their 2000 Ford SUV started shaking severely. According to Mischo, Faulk had her eyes on the road and was driving responsibly. “It just started swerving. It wasn’t her fault. It felt like the car was just freaking out.” said Mischo.
The Ford SUV veered into the median and crashed into a tree, then hit two more trees before it came to a stop.
Mischo quickly got out of the vehicle and ran to the road to get help. When she looked back towards the vehicle, it was in flames.
Karlyn McKell, 17, had already been able to get out of the wrecked vehicle and Kirsten Hurst, 17, had been thrown free by the impact. However, Faulk was pinned inside.
Authorities declared Faulk dead at the scene and the other teens were taken to Shands at the University of Florida. Mischo was the first one released and McKell and Hurst were expected to be released last Saturday.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators do not yet know the cause of the accident, as the impact of the crash and fire turned the vehicle into an unrecognizable tangle of seared metal.
Plant High School students and faculty members are trying to cope with the news of Faulk’s death. Faulk was the editor of the yearbook staff and the president of the Zeta service club.
