Posted on Jul 15, 2011

July 15, 2011 - Clearwater, Fla. - A man died Saturday night when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed in Clearwater.

ABC Action News
reports that the crash in Clearwater happened on Memorial Causeway near Island Way late Saturday night. Witnesses on the scene said that Justin Asmundo was driving his motorcycle at a speed far above the 30 miles per hour posted speed limit at the time of the accident.

Asmundo changed lanes before his vehicle went airborne as he went over a small bridge. Asmundo lost control of the motorcycle when it landed, causing it to crash into the median. Asmundo was thrown from the vehicle and into a small tree in the median.

Officials said the Asmundo was killed in the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcycle was the only vehicle involved in the accident and no further injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Memorial Causeway was partially blocked to traffic for several hours as emergency response crews worked to complete preliminary investigations and clear the scene. All lanes have since been reopened.

The fatal accident remains under investigation by Clearwater Police.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,978 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
