Man Held on No Bond for I-95 Crash

Posted on Dec 19, 2008

In Hobe Sound, a Port St. Lucie man is being held on no bond after authorities claim he caused a severe accident with numerous critical injuries on Interstate 95 last Saturday.  The man told authorities that he fell asleep, according to an arrest affidavit released Sunday.

Seven people were injured in the I-95 accident, said investigators.  It was reported that one child and two adults sustained critical injuries.

Jaime Jaramillo, 41, told the Florida Highway Patrol that “he had just come back from Mexico on a business trip.”  Jaramillo also told the Florida Highway Patrol that he works in Mexico from Monday through Friday.  The report stated that investigators determined that Jaramillo could be a flight risk.

While Jaramillo was being questioned regarding his involvement in the crash, he said that he must have fallen asleep and that something went through his windshield.  When police questioned him further, Jaramillo asked for his attorney and ended the interview.

Investigators said that Jaramillo had briefly left the accident scene before he was apprehended and questioned by investigators.  Jaramillo was tracked down by investigators as he walked on a road near the crash.  A helicopter and K-9 unit had been dispatched after the accident to locate Jaramillo.  The crash occurred on I-95 at mile marker 92 at 4:31 AM, according to the report.

Jaramillo was driving a Dodge truck at the time of the accident.  Seven occupants were in the silver Honda, which was involved in the crash.  Two of the occupants were airlifted by Life Flight to West Palm Beach’s St. Mary’s Medical Center in critical condition.  Two other children were taken by ambulance in fair condition to the same hospital and another child was taken to Martin Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The victim’s names and ages were not included in the report.  Jaramillo is being charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.
