The driver involved in the deadly Florida DUI accident in 2006, following a Miami Dolphins game, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
David Whiting was driving drunk after he left a Miami Dolphins game and crashed into David Mazer’s SUV on I-95 in Pompano Beach. The accident killed Mazer and his two-year-old daughter.
Mazer, a 40-year-old man, died at the accident scene and his 2-year-old daughter, Sydney, died at the hospital. Mazer’s four children and two other adults were injured in the crash and were hospitalized. Whiting was not injured in the deadly crash.
Whiting pleaded with a judge for leniency during a court hearing. He read a letter of apology saying he wished he could trade places with the deceased. Whiting’s mother also took the stand stating that her son’s personality and life changed significantly 28 years ago when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Even though the judge was sympathetic, the judge did not feel that Whiting’s medical condition altered the tragic outcome of his decision to drink and drive.
Whiting’s attorney described the sentence as a “death sentence.” He said that whether the judge gave him 35 years or life, it was one in the same. However, Mazer’s family had wanted more.
