November 4, 2010 - Land O' Lakes, FL - The morning of October 13 changed the lives of one Pasco County family when a mother and son were struck by a car while walking to a school bus stop.
WTSP.com reports that Susan K. Lewis, mother of 3, was struck and killed by Eugene Williams, 64, as he drove his Mitsubishi on Ambleside Drive. The vehicle struck Lewis and her son as they crossed Night Heron Drive while heading to the boy's school bus stop.
Since Susan's death, her husband Rob Lewis has been coping with the reality of raising 3 children alone, as well as helping his son recover from his injuries. In the process of recovery, Rob Lewis has taken up the fight against speeding in his neighborhood, which he believes was the fatal factor in the accident.
Rob Lewis claims there is a speeding issue in general in their neighborhood, although Pasco County deputies claim otherwise. The police department says they've only written 4 warnings and issued no speeding tickets on Night Heron Drive this year.
A speed trailer and radar guns have been used in the area, and public information officer Kevin Doll reports that they haven't seen an unusual amount of speeding. Meanwhile, Rob Lewis is working with a friend of the family who spoke to a Pasco County commissioner about the possibility of installing speed bumps in the area.
The fatal pedestrian accident is still being investigated to determine if speed was a factor.
According to the 2009 Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Traffic Crash Statistics Report, there were 197,214 traffic crashes resulting in injury and 2,563 fatalities as a result of vehicle accidents in Florida.
