

July 15, 2011 - St. Petersburg, Fla. - One person was taken to the hospital following a fiery three-car accident in St. Petersburg.
The St. Petersburg Times reports that the accident happened at about 2:28 p.m. Monday, July 11 on Interstate 275. Due to causes unknown, 3 vehicles collided in the southbound lanes of I-275 just south of the exit ramp for 22nd Avenue N.
An SUV that was involved in the accident immediately burst into flames.
Officials said that one person was transported to a local hospital as a result of the accident. The injured person's medical condition is unknown at this time.
The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.
The southbound lanes of I-275 were closed to traffic for some time following the accident but have since been reopened.
The cause of the accident remains to be determined. The accident is under ongoing investigation. All further investigations are being handled by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,978 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
