Pedestrian Struck, Killed Near Crest Lake Park

Posted on Dec 14, 2010

December 15, 2010 - Clearwater, FL - A man in his 50s was struck and killed as he attempted to cross the intersection near Crest Lake Park early evening on December 8.

Reports from WTSP.com say that Clearwater Police said the man was crossing the intersection on Gulf to Bay Boulevard at South Glenwood Avenue. He stepped into the path of oncoming traffic and was struck by a vehicle. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg but was pronounced dead 3 hours later despite medical efforts.

The man's name is being withheld until his next-of-kin can be contacted. Meanwhile, police are investigating the circumstances of the fatal accident. They have stated that the driver was not found to be under the influence during the incident and the investigation is still open.

Pedestrian accidents can cause serious, if not fatal, injury when a motor vehicle is involved. Drivers must be attentive to pedestrians at all times, even when not in designated crosswalks, to avoid potentially deadly accidents. Pedestrians also need to be aware of pedestrian laws and be wary of oncoming traffic to ensure their own safety. Negligence must be avoided on both the part of the driver and the pedestrian to avoid serious accidents.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' 2009 Traffic Crash Statistics Report, there were 197,214 traffic crashes resulting in injury and 2,563 fatalities as a result of vehicle accidents in Florida.

As a service to the residents of St. Petersburg, our firm will frequently publish blogs about local traffic accidents. We do this to raise awareness about the common types of motor vehicle accidents that occur in Florida that may result in serious injury or traffic fatalities.

Common accidents include, but are not limited to:

  • single-car accidents;
  • hit-and-run accidents;
  • accidents caused by hazardous road conditions; and
  • accidents caused by aggressive driving or distracted drivers.
