Police Officer Seriously Injured in Tampa Accident

September 15, 2011 - Tampa, Fla. - According to a report from ABC Action News, a Tampa police officer was injured in an accident early Sunday morning, Sept. 4.

Sgt. Robert Nassief was searching for a suspect that one of his deputies called in on Hillsborough Avenue and 43^rd Street. The driver of a silver Ford Expedition began to slow down, with the appearance of stopping but then suddenly made a U-turn.

The suspect's vehicle ran through a stop sign and was then struck by Nassief's police vehicle, which caused the suspect's car to flip. Nassief's vehicle slid into another car that was parked.

The Jaws of Life were required to remove Nassief out of his vehicle and he was taken to Tampa General Hospital. His injuries are serious but he is in stable condition.

The driver of the car, Desmond Smith, and 2 other passengers, Devon Johnson and Carlos Johnson suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. They were also driven to Tampa General Hospital.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,978 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
