Polk County Deputy Injured in Motorcycle Accident during Charity Event

Posted on Apr 11, 2011

April 11, 2011 - St. Petersburg, FL - A Polk County deputy sheriff sustained injuries after being involved in a motorcycle accident while working at a charity event benefitting slain officers in St. Petersburg.

According to reports from The St. Petersburg Times, Deputy Steven Neil was escorting event participants when another motorcyclist switched lanes directly in front of Neil's motorcycle. Although Neil used his brakes, he still came in contact with the motorcyclist's bike, which caused Neil's motorcycle to skid.

Neil was wearing a motorcycle helmet and using his emergency lights at the time of the accident and his condition is currently listed as stable. The other motorcyclist did not sustain any injuries as a result of the motorcycle collision. City police are investigating the accident and charges are pending.

Five Polk County deputies assisted in the Bikes for Badges fundraiser, which benefits slain officers. The event, which involves a motorcycle ride around St. Petersburg, raises money for families that have lost a loved one in law enforcement.

Motorcyclists are especially susceptible to injuries and death because of their lack of protective covering. An experienced St. Petersburg motorcycle crash lawyer can help you recover damages for your financial losses following a motorcycle accident. In some cases, you may also be awarded compensation for your pain and suffering.

Motorcycle accidents affect thousands of people each year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 413 fatalities as a result of motorcycle accidents in Florida.

As a service to the residents of St. Petersburg, our firm will frequently publish blogs about local traffic accidents. We do this to raise awareness about the common types of motor vehicle accidents that occur in Florida that may result in serious injury or traffic fatalities.
