

A St. Petersburg hit-and-run accident leaves an elderly woman injured when she was struck while crossing the street in a wheelchair. The incident took place at approximately 10:00 PM on Tuesday evening, December 8, 2009.
Local police are currently searching for the driver who hit 55-year-old Shirley Ann Lavine while she was crossing the street at 16th Street S in her electric wheelchair. According to police, Lavine was in a marked crosswalk when the accident occurred.
According to police, the unidentified driver then fled the scene heading west on 14th Avenue S at a high rate of speed. The force of the impact pushed Lavine’s wheelchair approximately 170 feet down the street.
Rescue workers transported Lavine to Bayfront Medical Center. She was treated for what officials describe as serious injuries.
Police have described the vehicle involved in the hit-and run accident as a mid-sized car. They believe that is was possibly a foreign car with light colors. They have not yet located the driver or the vehicle.
The St. Petersburg car accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have asked that anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who may have information pertaining to the case to contact detectives at 727-893-7780.
