A St. Petersburg accident involving two motorcycles and a car leaves the two motorcyclists in critical condition following the three-vehicle collision. The incident took on Tuesday evening, December 29, 2009, on Central Avenue.
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the incident began when a car swerved to avoid a pedestrian. Jacklyn Nugent, 21, was heading east on Central Avenue when she veered into the other lane in order to avoid Robert Ford, who was pushing a shopping cart across the street.
Sherman Miller, 35, and Matthew Jones, 29, were also heading eastbound on Central Avenue when Nugent’s car swerved in front of their motorcycles. Miller, who was unable to stop in time, slammed into the back of Nugent’s car. He was ejected from his motorcycle and flew through the back window of Nugent’s car, landing in the back seat.
While attempting to avoid the collision, Jones struck the back of Miller’s motorcycle. He lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the center median. Both motorcyclists were reported to be wearing helmets at the time of the incident.
Rescue crews transported both motorcyclists to Bayfront Medical Center where they were listed in critical condition.
The St. Petersburg accident is still under investigation. It has been determined that both motorcycles were traveling at a high rate of speed when the incident took place.
