St. Petersburg Widow Sues Lawn Mower Manufacturer for Husband’s Death

Posted on Aug 25, 2009

Deborah Green is suing the manufacturer of the Toro Groundmaster 7200 lawn mower and the distributor, Wesco Turf, Inc., for her husband’s death.  Osby Green, a 58-year-old man, was killed in an accident in 2007 while working for St. Petersburg’s parks department.

Osby Green was killed after his lawn mower flipped and fell into a storm canal.  He become trapped under the water and was pronounced dead at St. Petersburg General Hospital.  Two neighbors tried to save him, but could not lift the lawn mower.

According to Green’s lawyer, the companies failed to warn potential end-users of the lawn mower’s hazards.  There have been other fatalities and injuries involving the same equipment and some claims have been made against the manufacturer.

Osby Green had worked for the city for 26 years.  His wife is still confused as to what caused his accident, since he had been doing those yards for years.

The police report showed that Osby “was operating the mower close to the retaining wall and the mower flipped over trapping him underneath.”

Branden Happel, the public relations manager for Toro Groundmaster, said, “the safety of our customers is always of utmost concern. We never want to see a customer become injured operating our equipment.  For that reason, we conduct extensive testing and apply high safety standards to all our machines. We also encourage customers to learn as much as possible about the safe operation of their machine."
