Tampa Neighborhood Pit Bull Day Changes Minds about Dangerous Breed

Posted on Jun 24, 2011

Tampa, Fla. - Pit bulls are notorious in the news for attacking people, especially children. They are dogs that have been bred to fight, even to the death.

ABC Action News
reports that a group of people in Tampa are making an effort to change this breed's "bad reputation." These people are fighting a very steep uphill battle.

Earlier this month, dozens of pit bull owners and their dogs gathered in Tampa to pamper their pets and to share their point of view on the breed. They called it Neighborhood Pit Bull Day, and organized it with the goal of showing people just how obedient pit bulls can be.

"If you train them to touch people and be kind to people and be friendly, that's what they're going to do," said Daniel Brown, the owner of two pit bulls.

Daniel's brother, Corey Brown, had a different opinion on the matter. Corey Brown had been bitten by a dog once, and has been afraid of them ever since.

"All dogs bite," said Corey Brown, "that's how I feel. Little poodles, pits, Rottweilers. They all bite."

While what Corey Brown says may be true to some extent, pit bulls still dominate dog attack statistics. Dogsbite.org, a non-profit educational website, reported that roughly 1,000 Americans require emergency care daily after a dog bite attack. Pit bulls are responsible for a whopping 59% of all fatal dog attacks in the United States.
