Tampa Truck Crash Leaves 1 Dead and 1 Injured

Tampa, Fla. - One person died and another was critically injured Tuesday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. in a serious truck crash.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that the accident happened on Armenia Avenue, near Linebaugh Avenue. Jeanette Aguiar, 57, was driving home with her father, Jose Veciana, 89, when the accident occurred.

For reasons unknown, Aguiar's vehicle drifted into the opposite lane of traffic and collided head-on with an oncoming FedEx truck.

Both father and daughter were transported to St. Joseph's Hospital immediately following the truck crash. Veciana was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

Aguiar remains in the hospital and is said to have life-threatening injuries. Aguiar's mother, Norma Williams, said she hopes and prays for the best, but she does not expect Aguiar to survive her injuries.

The driver of the FedEx truck, Yidier Morales, 42, and a passenger in the truck, Patrick McHayle, 38, both suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Tampa police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 Florida Crash Statistics, there were 2,558 fatalities as a result of car accidents in Florida.
