Tampa-St. Petersburg Second Deadliest Urban Center for Pedestrians

June 10, 2011 - Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla. - According to a study conducted by Transportation for America, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area is ranked the second deadliest urban center for pedestrians on a list of metro areas with a population of 1 million or more, as reported in an article from USA Today.

Four of the top 5 spots were occupied by Florida metro areas, with the first being the greater Orlando metropolitan area, and the 3^rd and 4^th being Jacksonville and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano beach, respectively.

As the number of people killed in car accidents continues to drop, falling 27% in the past decade, the number of pedestrians killed has fallen only 14% over the same time period. According to the study, within the past 10 years more than 47,700 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents; more than 688,000 were injured. 

Representatives for Transportation for America indicate that the problem is preventable. It has been found that the majority of pedestrian fatalities occur on multi-lane roads constructed primarily for vehicles, while ignoring pedestrian safety. 

James Corless, the director of Transportation for America, suggests raising more local funding dedicated to improving the safety of roads and crosswalks. Additionally, he says, a uniform policy instituted to improve national road safety should be presented.

One such proposal presented in the Senate is the "Complete Streets Act," which would require states to build more sidewalks, bikeways and pedestrian-conscious road improvements.
