Teen Killed in Florida Car Accident

A teen driver was on his way to school when he was killed in a car accident.  Phillip B. Galbmilion, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School who recently turned 18, was driving his 1997 Pontiac north on Belle Terre Parkway the morning of Thursday, January, 29, 2009, when he crashed into a concrete pole.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Galbmilion’s car ran off the east side of the road and when Galbmilion apparently overcorrected, his vehicle crossed the roadway and smashed into a concrete power pole on the west side of the road south of Zinnia Trail.  Galbmilion was not wearing his seat belt and died at the crash scene.

Galbmilion loved playing ice hockey and had plans to attend the University of Minnesota.  His family plans to bury him in Minneapolis, as he had lots of friends in the area.

Galbmilion’s parents moved to the United States from Russia.  He was born in a suburb of Minneapolis and started playing hockey at the age of 12.  Galbmilion later moved with his parents to Palm Coast, Florida in August 2007.  In Florida, he played roller hockey at the rink at Flagler Palm Coast High School.

He was one his way to school Thursday when the crash occurred, said Flagler Palm Coast Principal Nancy Willis.  Teachers at the high school were notified of the accident and Galbmilion’s death as classes started.  Students were informed of the tragic news just before lunch and a grief counselor was available.

“It’s very hard.  One of the hardest things you have to do is to tell students and faculty that we’ve lost a student,” said Willis.

The night of the accident, flowers were placed around the concrete power pole at the crash scene and messages were written on the pole.  A candlelight vigil was planned on Saturday by family and friends at the accident site.
