One man is dead following a tragic car accident in Sarasota on April 18, 2009. Tire failure has been cited as a possible cause of the fatal crash.
A man was killed and a woman and three children were injured after the tread belt of a tire on their vehicle separated, which caused the vehicle they were traveling in to flip over and crash. The fatal car accident occurred at approximately 7:30 Saturday night on Interstate 75 close to River Road.
According to investigators, the left rear tire tread belt of their 1997 Nissan Pathfinder separated, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to flip over.
Based on a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, Robert Meehan, a 32-year-old man, was killed at the scene of the accident after being ejected from the car. Yahaira Castro, a 27-year-old woman, was also ejected from the Pathfinder and sustained serious injuries. Castro was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where she was listed as being in critical condition.
Florida Highway Patrol reported that Meehan and Castro were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, which explains their ejections from the vehicle.
The three children that were riding in the car were transported to Venice Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
