Young Girl Survives Head-on Collision

Posted on Nov 03, 2008

A four-year-old girl was injured last month after a crash on the Crosstown Expressway.  The young girl, Summer Moll, was transported to Tampa General Hospital after Cheryl Maria Riemann, a 25-year-old woman, crashed into her mother’s vehicle while heading east in the westbound lanes of the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway near Palm River Road.  Summer’s mother, 24-year-old Jennifer O’Boyle, died in the accident.

Summer Moll was expected to be discharged after spending five weeks in the hospital.  She still has casts on her arms and pins in her legs resulting from the accident.  Summer is able to speak, although she talks softly, and can now eat regular food.  Doctors have recommended that Summer spend some time recovering at home before she returns to Tampa General Hospital for several months of in-patient rehabilitation.

Her grandmother was awarded temporary custody, despite the objections of Summer’s father.  Tammy Rosian, Jennifer O’Boyle’s mother, said that she pursued custody of Summer because she wants the girl to get to know her father before moving in with him.  “I’m willing to work out something with the father,” said Rosian.

Joshua Moll moved to Tampa from Texas on a “semi permanent basis,” according to his lawyer Theodore Rechel.  Summer’s father arrived in Tampa the day after the tragic accident and has since obtained work, an apartment and training for caring for Summer’s medical needs.

According to Rechel, Florida child welfare workers were planning to recommend that Summer be placed in Joshua Moll’s custody, but the judge did not permit testimonies at the custody hearing.  Another custody hearing will take place in the future to re-address the issue.

Riemann was charged with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI resulting in serious injury and reckless driving resulting in serious injury.  At the time of the accident, she had a 0.244 blood-alcohol level.
